St Martin’s Church
St Martin’s Church is part of the Church of England Deanery of Pontefract, and is open to visitors all day, every day.
Dating from the 12th century, the beautiful magnesia limestone church with its elegant broach spire, is a hidden gem. Notable features include a 13th century stone effigy of a knight, probably Adam de Newmarch, a mediaeval prayer carved on the jam of the south door, and an unusual 17th century Spanish tiled mural of the Last Supper.
The interior of the church was renovated in the late nineteenth century. Cassandra, Countess of Rosse was the inspiration and chief source of funding for this. Bodley, a leading architect of the time, designed the magnificent painted ceilings and glass by Kempe, enhances this wonderful building.
Inside are two memorials dedicated to the Rosse family. A modern one was designed by Simon Verity in 1979 for the Sixth Earl and the other is for the Fifth Earl and his two brothers, all of whom died as serving soldiers in the First World War.
The residency rules that restricted couples to marry only in their parish church have changed so that those who wish to be married in a particular church need only provide evidence of a link to that parish. St Martin’s is a beautiful place in which to hold a Christian wedding and is situated next door to Womersley Park for ease and convenience on your special day.
